Multipages in an article.
Sometimes you have a very large article to be added into a single content. You don't want it to be one single article way down the page so you break it up into pages just like a word processor the M's "Words", or any others for that matters would do. Joomla! has this facility to paginate your article like so since version 1.0.x adn you just need to know how to activate it. In doing so, you could also unleash the Table of Content (TOC) style index in each page.
In Joomla! 1.0.X
1. Enable (published) the mambot for pagination. i.e. the "Mos Pagination".
2. Set the "Table of Content in Multi-pages Item" to "Show".
3. In the content put { mospagebreak } to split the pages.
In Joomla! 1.5.X
1. Enable (published) the plugin for "Content - Pagebreak" in Plugin Manager.
2. Set the "Table Content" to be shown or hidden inside that plugin as shown in figure below.
3. Click "Page Break" at the bottom of Content Editor or add "<hr id = "system-readmore" />" to split the article.

Add a Table of Contents functionality to a paginated Article. This is done automatically through the use of the Pagebreak button added to the lower part of the text panel in an Article. The HTML code is included here as a reference of what is available. The Pagebreak will itself display in the text window as a simple horizontal line.
